IFBT 2010 World Championship Results
The annual IFBT Beach Tennis World Championship took place in Ravenna, Italy on July
24-August 2. In attendance were the best players from around the world who arrived in
Marina di Ravenna, Italy to compete in over 38 beach tennis categories and the Nations
Cup. Over 1,000 players were present and over 2,000 spectators watched the exciting
beach tennis matches. Team USA consists of Adrienne Cerra (Miami, FL), Nahitza Padro
(Boca Raton), Jan Macko (Boca Raton), FL, and Rick Simeon (Miami, FL).
Deerfield Beach, Florida is the training center for some of the best players in the U.S
including team USA. Macko and Simeon were gold medalists in the Tennis Racket
category at the 2009 event. This year Macko and Simeon placed 2nd and received the
Silver Medal in the Men’s tennis Racket Division. The team of Nicola Gambi and Suci
defeated Simeon and Macko 7-5 in a match that was exciting for the fans for its high level
of play. The Women’s team of Cerra and Padro competed well against teams from
France and Italy to bring home the Bronze medal.
In the Men’s Open singles competition Simeon and Macko advanced further than any
American team in the history of the beach tennis World Championships. Both players
were first in there group and advance through the elimination rounds before meeting
each other in the round of 16. The two friends and partners battled to a tie-breaker.
Macko pulled the match out 6-5. He then won the next match to advance to the Semi-
final and grab the bronze medal. No American player had ever won a singles match at
the World Championships. Simeon and Macko won a combined 9 matches and lost 2.
They partnered up to defeat a top Italian team make the quarter-finals of the Men’s Open
paddle competition. The team of Macko and Simeon were defeated by the #1 seeded
team of Paolo Tronci and Enrico Cinoci 9-5. Overall it was a huge success for the U.S.
team and the season continues with tournaments around the world including Siesta Key,
Florida and Puerto Rico.
