2011 Frank Congemi IFBT-USA Beach Tennis World Cup Results
Deerfield Beach, FL USA
The 2011 Frank Congemi IFBT-USA Beach Tennis World Cup was a huge success as over 100 players from around
the world participated in the Deerfield Beach, Florida tournament on May 14-15.  Teams from across the USA
including FL, CA, NY and MO, as well as Brazil, Puerto Rico, Columbia, Aruba, Peru, and Mexico were among the
countries with participants.  It was a hot weekend as the players battled through 90 degree temperatures all day.

In Men’s Doubles Open the competition was fierce.  The top seeds were Adao Chagas and Leopoldo Correa of Brazil,
Rick Simeon and Jan Macko of USA (Florida), Bertrand Coulet and Stephan Sayoc of Aruba/New York, and Donny
Young and Marty Salokas of USA (California).  Each of the top seeded teams was undefeated in group play.  The
quarter-finals had some great matches with two Puerto Rican teams squaring off.  Jerry Cruz and Alejandro upset
Pedro Ochoa and Alejandro Mendez to make it to the semi-final round.  Aruba team (Coulet /Sayoc) defeated
California team (Young/ Salokas) in a tough quarter final draw.  The team from Brazil (Correa/Chagas)and the team
from Puerto Rico (Zapata/ Colon) were the other two teams to qualify for the Semi-final.  In the first Semi-Final
Coulet/Sayoc defeated the pair of Correa/Chagas in a great match with amazing rallies.  In the other Semi-final Macko/
Simeon defeated Zapata/Colon.  The final lived up to expectations as these teams were very familiar with each other.  
Macko/ Simeon started off hot and took a 4-1 lead in the match to see Coulet/Sayoc storm back and take the lead.  
Coulet/Sayoc held on for a 7-5 victory.  It was a tough defeat for beach tennis gold medalists Macko/Simeon, who lost
in the 2010 World Cup finals in a tie-breaker to a top ranked Italian team.

The Women’s Doubles Open had exciting matches and a great level of play throughout the weekend.  Teams from
Puerto Rico, Aruba, Brazil, California, Florida and Missouri participated.  After group play the semi-finals consisted of
Kim O’keefe/Kelsey O’keefe of St. Louis, Maria Butts and Marilou Lekanne of Aruba/Miami Beach, Elenore Derkson
and Roos Dehart of Aruba, and Nikki Roth and Kasey Walden of Boca Raton, Florida.  Derkson and Roos defeated
Roth and Walden in the first Semi-Final.  Lekanne and Butts won the next Semi-final over O’keefe and O’keefe.  This
set up a final with 3 players from the island of Aruba.  Lekanne and Butts took the final match and first place in the
Women’s division.

The event culminated with the 2011 IFBT-USA Beach Tennis Player of the Year Award. A panel of judges evaluated the
criteria on the athlete who encompassed being the overall best in athleticism, sportsmanship, enthusiasm and style.
The female winner was Cristina Andreotti (Brazil). The male winner was a tie with Chase Tyrrell and Marshall Morgan
of Deerfield Beach, FL.
