| Miami South Beach, FL It was a beautiful day in Miami's South Beach for IFBT-USA's March Ranking Tournament. Sunny skies and 80 degree weather set the perfect backdrop for a day at the beach. A high level of play was in the air as players from all around Florida came into town to compete in the Men's and Women's Singles Tournament and Mixed Doubles Event. The Men's draw, composed of quality players, battled through three matches in their group in order to advance to a Semi-Final. In the Men's Semi-Finals, Jan Macko (Boca Raton) defeated Winston Owen (Sarasota) 7-3 in a match with incredible rallies and intense competition. Thomas Hipp (Miami Beach) out-dueled Rick Simeon (Miramar) 7-5 in a tight battle. With Simeon up 5-3, Hipp stormed back to take the match. In the Final match, Thomas Hipp was victorious 7-2 over Jan Macko. It was the first singles tournament for Hipp and his 5 straight victories was a fantastic accomplishment! The Ladies Tournament was equally competitive with some new faces and some experienced players, making it an overall exciting draw. Also battling through three matches in their group, the women fought in order to advance to a semi-final round. The first Semi-Final group consisted of Marilou Lekanne (Miami Beach) defeating Adrienne Cerra (Miramar). The second Semi-Final had newcomer Luisana Gandica (Weston) defeating Elodie Wendling (Miami Beach) in a tight match. In the end, Marilou Lekanne took the Finals title after winning her fifth match of the day by defeating Luisana Gandica. The Mixed Doubles Event was highly spirited and fun for all the teams involved. Each team played three qualifying matches. In the Semi-Finals, Jan Macko and Nahitza Padro defeated Robert Liska and Beatrice Vaquer. Also, Winston Owen and Marilou Lekanne won the semi's match over Thomas Hipp and Elodi Wendling. The Finals winners were Lekanne and Owen who took the Mixed Doubles Champions title over Padro and Macko. The IFBT-USA Tour will continue in 2010 with another exciting Ranking Tournament scheduled for April. |
