Siesta Key Beach Tennis Open Results
Beach tennis players converged on the beautiful Florida Gulf Coast's white sand
beaches of Siesta Key over the weekend of June 5th. Players traveled from as
far as Aruba to attend the event. Teams competed for prize money and prizes.
The level of play was strong and the athletes were enthusiastic. A tremendous
turn out from local Sarasota Tennis Club Pro’s and Professionals from the IMG
Bollettieri Academy gave the locals many teams to cheer for. IFBT-USA’s
Florida Gulf Coast Director, Winston Owen, ran a 1st class event with
personalized t-shirts, gifts and beverages for all players. The divisions included
in the tournament were Men’s and Women’s Open Doubles with both Tennis
Racket and Beach Tennis Racket (paddles), Mixed Doubles, and Juniors.
The main events were the Men’s and Women’s Beach Tennis Racket Open.
There were professional level players, as well as first-timers, making the event a
fun and exciting tournament. Teams were put into groups with the top two
teams advancing to the quarter final rounds. In women’s play, the semi-finals
had Marylou Lekanne and Beatrice Vaquer (Miami Beach) defeat Maria Buuts
and Tina Escobedo (Aruba). The other semi-final had Tiffany Davis and
Brianna Harris (Sarasota) take the victory against Carol Steinhausser (Miami)
and Sarka Vitkova (Sarasota). The finals saw the team of Davis/Harris play
Lekanne/Vaquer. Davis/Harris won the title with a hard fight battle over the
team from Miami. The Sarasota locals cheered on their local Tennis Pro’s
through their first IFBT-USA tour victory. The team of Lekanne/Vaquer showed
the crowd they are a team to be contended with at all Beach Tennis events.
In the Men’s Paddle division some of the most exciting action took place in the
quarter-finals. #1 seeds Jan Macko and Rick Simeon found themselves down
6-4 before mounting a comeback and defeating the team of Gonzalez/Buttini
9-7. The unseeded team from the Bollettieri Academy nearly pulled off the
upset in front of a boisterous local crowd. The semi-finals had the top three
seeds advance another team from the Bollettieri Academy. In the first semi-final
the #2 seeds Bertrand Coulet (Aruba) and Alberto Gutierrez (Sarasota) played
#3 seeds Thomas Hipp (Germany) and Manuel Lauter (Miami Beach). The
quality of the match was immense as both teams tried to gain an advantage.
The match was a back and forth affair with Coulet/Gutierrez defeating
Hipp/Lauter 8-6 in a tight match.
In the next match, Rick Simeon and Jan Macko played local Sarasota Tennis Pro’
s German Alvarez and Pablo Mayorga. After surviving the quarter-finals,
Simeon/Macko defeated the talented team of Alvarez/Mayorga 8-3. The
Sarasota team reached their first tour semi-final in as many attempts. The final
was a familiar affair with Macko/Simeon playing the team of Coulet/Alberto.
Coulet traveled from Aruba and is one of the top beach tennis players in the
world. He also plays for Team France in world competitions. Alberto is an up
and coming beach tennis player with tons of talent. The team of Macko/Simeon
has played with Coulet many times in the past and this would be the first time
they had ever met in a final. Coulet/Gutierrez started the match very sharp and
took a 5-3 lead in the 8 game pro set. Some of the best rallies of the
tournament took place during the match with players hitting angled drop shots
and amazing jumping overheads. Macko/Simeon once again made the proper
adjustments and came back to win the match 8-6.
Director Winston Owen ran a terrific tournament for the players and spectators
as he brought this great event to the beautiful Siesta Key, Florida. Thanks to all
sponsors, City of Siesta Key, players and fans for a great weekend and will see
you again in October!
