Results of IFBT-USA 2010 World Cup

It was a beautiful weekend on Deerfield Beach for the second annual 2010 IFBT-USA
World Cup Beach Tennis event.  The weather was sunny and in the 90’s with a nice
tropical breeze as over 75 players battled throughout the weekend.  The categories
included Men’s and Women’s Open Doubles, Women’s Singles, Men’s A Division,
Juniors, Mixed Doubles, and Men’s Tennis Racket Division.   The main event was the
Men’s and Women’s Open, where top teams competed with beach tennis paddles on
Saturday the 22nd of May.  Teams from Italy, Chile, Puerto Rico, Columbia, Ecuador,
Peru, Argentina, Czech Republic, Germany, Venezuela, and of course Americans from
all over the USA, including Florida, South Carolina, and California participated in the
event.

The Men’s Paddle competition had the strongest field and largest draw of any 2010
paddle tournament in the United States.  The top four seeds were #1 Fabio
Tarlazzi/Marco Montanari, #2 Rick Simeon/Jan Macko, #3 Chris Henderson/Phil
Whitesell, and #4 Donny Young/Marty Salokas.  After pool play the quarter-finals began
with some great match-ups.  Chris Henderson and Phil Whitesell defeated Marty
Salokas and Donny Young in a match with great shot making and high level points.
Thomas Hipp of Miami and Manuel advanced to the Semi-finals along with the teams of
Tarlazzi/Montanari, and Macko/Simeon. The Italian Duo overcame a great effort from
Hipp and Manuel with a 9-5 victory.  In the other Semi-final the 2010 World Champions
(tennis racket) Simeon/Macko  faced the 2009 National Champions(tennis rackets)
Henderson/Whitesell.  Macko/Simeon played a solid match and won 9-3.  The
Macko/Simeon team competed in Italy in 2009 and trained with the paddle extensively,
an experience that proved to be helpful in the match.

The final was USA vs. Italy.  USA's
Simeon and Macko went up 6-3 quickly with sharp
serving and finishing quick points.  The Italians,
Tarlazzi/Montanari stormed back to go
up 8-7.  It was on serve as the match went to a tie-breaker.  The crowd was cheering on
the Americans as they were to become the only U. S. team to defeat a highly ranked
Italian team with the paddles.  In the end, the Italians pulled out the tie-breaker 7-4 to
end the most exciting match in World Cup history.

On the Women’s side, the team of
Del Pasqua/Ridolphi proved to be an experienced
team for the other competitors. The finals had the Italian team play
Steinhauser/Zuleta
from Miami Beach, FL, with a 7-4 win for the Italians. The match was highly entertaining
with long rallies and skilled ball placement.  The American team of Zuleta/Steinhauser is
a team on the rise to watch!
