The IFBT Beach Tennis Championships held on
November 11-14, 2010 in Puerto Rico was a
great success. The event was part of the 2010
IFBT-World Tour in which local players combined
with players traveling from abroad competed in
intermediate and professional levels for trophies
and prize money. The beautiful Wyndham Rio
Mar Resort, located near the famous El Yunque
rainforest, was the host hotel of the tournament
with its spectacular caramel-covered sand
beaches, first class golf and tennis resort,
oceanfront pools and hot tubs, tiki bars and
restaurants, and of course luxury spa and
casino. The staff and IFBT- Puerto Rico
President, Miguel A. Hernández Zapata (DBC’s
President and CEO) made all players feel
welcome and ran a first rate tournament.
Players from the United States, Colombia,
Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and others
participated in the Open and Intermediate levels
in Men’s, Women’s and Mix-Doubles action.

The Women’s Open Division had some very talented teams in a close and competitive field. After group play was finished four
teams advanced to the semi-final rounds. Adrienne Cerra (USA) and Nahitza Padro (USA) played Ingrid Lozada (PR) and Veronika
Motañez (PR) in the first semi-final. Ingrid and Veronika won in a tie-breaker to win the match 8-7. The crowd was energized by the
local team’s effort and was very supportive to all the players. It was an all Puerto Rican final, with the team of Sasha Verret and
Beatriz Rivera defeating Ingrid Lozada and Verónica Motañez.
The Men’s Open Division concluded in and all USA final as the team of Rick Simeon and Jan Macko from Florida, defeated Phil
Whitesel and Chris Henderson of South Carolina. It was a rematch of the World Cup Semi-Final held in Deerfield Beach, Florida May
23. The match was close throughout until Macko and Simeon surged intoo the lead 6-4. Simeon and Macko broke serve at 6-5 to
win the match 7-5 and win the title. The crowd support from Puerto Rico was amazing and it helped the players take there game to
a high level. In the Open Mixed Doubles, the team of Jan Macko and Nahitza Padró (USA) resulted on top of the Puerto Rican team
of Pedro Ochoa and Beatriz Rivera. This was Macko and Padro's first tournament championship and well earned. The competiton
in mixed doubles was excellent and many teams participated. However, the surprise of the tournament was the junior team of
Gabriel Mora and Javier Méndez, 14 and 13 years old respectively, who reached the finals in the Intermediate Category, but were
beaten by Eduardo Ayala of Puerto Rico and Alejandro Ramírez of México.
